Practical, genuine improvements that raise a home's EPC rating and help cut energy bills — explained plainly by a local assessor.
An EPC reflects the building itself — its insulation, heating, windows and lighting — rather than how you happen to use it on the day. The improvements below are the ones that genuinely move the rating, and many also cut your energy bills. On the visit I record what's actually there, so anything you've upgraded counts towards your score.
One of the most cost-effective improvements. Topping up loft insulation to a good depth makes a real difference to both your rating and your heating bills.
A modern condensing boiler with good controls scores well. If you've recently replaced an older unit, that upgrade will show in your rating.
A programmer, room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves all count. They're a low-cost way to nudge the score and give you better control of your heating.
Swapping remaining old bulbs for LED fittings is quick, cheap, and recorded in the assessment. Every fixed low-energy light helps.
Double or secondary glazing improves the rating and comfort. If most windows are already double glazed, that's reflected in the result.
Cavity or solid wall insulation, hot water cylinder jackets and draught-proofing all support a better rating where they're fitted.
